Generous Spacing
When arranging living room furniture in a large space, remember to be generous with your spacing – even more than you would be in a smaller space. The goal is to have pieces close enough that they feel cohesive and allow for a natural conversation (no more than 10 feet is the general guideline) but far enough apart that there’s breathing space between each element. Don’t be afraid to allow for larger gaps between chairs and side tables or table lamps, the sofa and coffee table and definitely, between furniture arrangements.
The balance between sizes, colours, and patterns
Oversized ottomans and settees will look just perfect placed close to a delicate coffee table, especially when you choose the right colours and patterns to complement the look. The more balanced your room looks, the more welcome your guests will feel.
Strategically place tall potted plants
Fill vertical height in rooms with tall ceilings or fill bare, lonely corners with potted trees. As long as your space gets enough light to support the plant’s needs, you really can’t go wrong with adding a massive houseplant.
Creative lighting
No matter what size of a room you have, lighting can make a difference in how the room feels. Fortunately, with a large room, there are often more windows, so during the daylight, it isn’t as much of a concern. But shadows and dark corners can make everyone feel uneasy at night. If you have just one center ceiling light, you will likely want to add more light with lamps. A room can look awkward if you have too many lamps, though, so here are a couple of tips for lighting a large room.
Perhaps pick two or three lamps of larger scale with similar shades and then mix in slimmer less obtrusive metal floor and wall lamps to bring lighting all around the room. Mixing in glass lamps can also prevent lamp overload.
